Is your little one finally out of the delicate baby-hair phase and now you are determined to see a full head of coils and curls? Or have you been struggling with a bald spot on your little one’s head for months and been oiling his or her scalp daily to finally see it grow long and full? It’s ok to have hair goals for your children as long as it’s a healthy and fun process for both you and and your child. Here are 7 things we want you to know about setting natural hair goals for your children.
1. No Rush: Natural Hair Goals
Always remember healthy hair is a journey and not a destination. Consistency is key and too much pressure to reach your child’s hair goal can bring on frustration.
Children are still learning to identify with their hair and might not understand why it’s such a big deal. Make the journey fun and you’ll reach that goal before you know it.
Maybe you have been struggling with your little one's scalp issues and seen growth stall. Try our powerful ‘Grow it long Scalp Serum – Dry Scalp and hair growth oil.
2. Comparison is a killjoy
Social media can help us find inspiration to set a certain hair goal but should not revolve around comparing your child’s hair to someone else’s. We want to teach our little ones to celebrate others without trying to be like them. We want them to recognise their own beautiful features and be confident in them.
You might have reached a certain goal that both you and your child are excited about only to compare to someone on social media or in your friends/family circle and feel like you are not doing as great as them.
Don’t hesitate to set several mid goals, so that you have multiple victories to celebrate. Be proud of your progress, you are on the right track!
3. Every head of hair is unique
Every child is unique and so is every head of hair! If you have multiple children, you know that even siblings often do not have similar hair textures.
With different textures come different needs. Be mindful of your child’s texture, porosity needs, etc. when setting certain hair goals.
Always keep your child’s uniqueness in the centre.
4. Low Manipulative Hairstyles
Children's scalp is particularly tender so low manipulative hairstyles are important to help prevent hair damage and hair loss. At Root2Tip, we are obsessed with banding hairstyles for kids. It's a great protective style that isn't too tight on the scalp and can be left in for a longer period of time.
5. Teach Your Child
If you are going to have hair goals for your child, a key one to have is teaching your child to learn to love their hair and how to manage it. Trust me they will appreciate it!
I've been doing my daughter's hair since a baby and now she knows how to look after it -she is grateful for that!
Many women in the black community now unfortunately do not know how to care for their hair, and are only starting to learn now.
Whilst it's never too late to learn- this could have been avoided if we learnt at an earlier age. You can help break this cycle by teaching your child how to care and love their hair from now.
6. Moisture: Natural Hair Goals For Children
Moisturised hair is a goal that you can have for children at any age. Our Honey-rain Juice is a great Leave-In Conditioner for both detangling and imparting moisture into your child's hair.
You could also follow this up with Heaven's Hair Milk to help enhance your child's tresses to be silky-smooth.
7. Length: Natural Hair Goals For Children
Length is a major goal that many seem to have on their journey and whilst there's nothing inherently wrong with this goal, it's particularly important to be patient and realistic with this for children.
I grew my daughter's hair to back length at age 5, with all Root2Tip products, so I know it is possible!
However, linking to our tip about no pressure, it's important to be flexible with this goal in mind and let it happened organically.
Don't get stressed if your child's hair doesn't reach a certain length by a certain time. Be flexible with it and focus on healthy hair as a priority.
All in all, hair goals are a great way for you and your child to see their hair thrive and have fun on that great journey too. Let us accompany you with our new Back2School Moisture Bundle.
