What is Shea butter?

Shea butter is fat (ivory in color) that is extracted from the nut of the African Shea tree native to Africa. It has been in use for thousands of years and it packs a lot of benefits for both hair and skin. The Shea (Karite) tree can be found predominantly in parts of Western, Central and Eastern Africa. Together, these regions form what is commonly referred to as the Shea belt.

Benefits of Shea butter for hair

Moisturizes hair
When hair lacks moisture it becomes dry, frizzy and dull. Shea butter naturally moisturizes hair. Its moisturizing properties are attributed to its high fatty acid content. These include: oleic and stearic, palmitic, arachidic and linoleic acids. They help drench individual hair strands with sufficient amounts of moisture and hydrate the scalp.

Prevents breakage
Hair breakage can be a menace when you are trying to grow long and healthy hair. Shea butter helps prevent breakage by nourishing and strengthening hair roots and strands. The abundant availability of fatty acids give it the ability to enter the hair shaft and replenish it rapidly. It also helps prevent damage to hair follicles while taming split ends.

Helps detangle hair
Shea butter helps soften hair. It makes it easier to brush and style by detangling matted hair. This African butter is even more magical and beneficial since it promotes healthy hair growth. Shea butter also improves the appearance of your hair by adding luster and shine, therefore making your hair look healthier and darker.

Offers UV protection
Shea offers unmatched protection from harmful effects of sun exposure. It reduces oxidative and physicochemical stress caused by UV rays. Through such protection, Shea butter helps avoid damage to the stem cell in the hair follicle, thus stopping production of dry and damaged hair strands.

Soothes scalp
Another thing that Shea butter is known for is its ability to reduce inflammation of the scalp. Shea butter reduces itchiness, irritation, flakiness and acts as a natural barrier to microbes, fungus and bacteria. This helps soothe the scalp and promote circulation. Furthermore, Shea butter suppresses hair loss factors and prevents premature aging of hair follicles and strands.
